Flying his new Veteran Home Loans MXS-RH this week in Denison, Texas, Rob was well positioned in second place after the first two flights.

Then, on the third and final flight (the Unknown), Rob put together an outstanding performance which catapulted him solidly into first place to win the title!

Finishing the week strong, Rob won the 4 Minute Freestyle flight  in which the pilots get to fly far outside of the restrictions of regular competition.  Limited only by their skill, aircraft capability, and imagination, this flight is about letting it all hang out, dialing up the wow factor, and demonstrating one’s complete mastery of the art which is aerobatic demonstration flying.

This past week Rob was in Italy competing against the very best competition aerobatic pilots in the world.  The flying Rob is doing at the 2011 Unlimited World Aerobatic Championship (aka WAC 2011) is very different than the airshow routine he performs for millions of fans each year though.

With much less “wow” factor, competition flying is about maneuvering the aircraft within a very regimented set of guidelines.  Straight lines must be flown perfectly horizontal, vertical, or on a 45 degree incline up or down.  Loops must appear round as viewed by the judges, regardless of the wind conditions; which can easily make a perfect circle flown on a calm day look like an egg if flown the same way on a day when the winds are blowing across at 20 knots.

It’s been said that while the discipline of competition flying helps greatly in learning to perform a consistent and safe airshow routine;  that it is equally true that the shoulder rolls, blowing smoke and tumbles of exciting airshow flying, do little to prepare one for world level competition aerobatics.  Join us in congratulating Rob and Team USA!
